Central Gardens House, Wurundjeri
Central Gardens House, Wurundjeri
Set within an established garden and adjoining Central Gardens, this project brings together the character of an existing heritage home with a carefully considered contemporary addition. The brief was to create a generous family home for three generations while working within the constraints of a narrow, south-facing site and closely positioned neighbours.
The extension is shaped around light, outlook and connection to the garden. A series of changes in ceiling height, skylights and carefully positioned openings bring natural light deep into the plan, while views through the home create a sense of connection between the different levels. The addition of a second storey allowed the existing footprint to be used more efficiently, creating a sequence of spaces that feel connected without compromising privacy.
Materiality provides a quiet transition between old and new. White surfaces and warm oak establish a restrained palette, with timber panelling introducing warmth as the circulation moves through the house. The kitchen and dining spaces form the centre of family life, with oak joinery and a generous island creating a tactile and durable backdrop for everyday use.
A bridge connecting the upper-level spaces becomes both a circulation route and a moment of pause, overlooking the living area below and drawing light from the skylight above. Externally, the upper-level facade responds to the garden and neighbouring context through angled openings and perforated corrugated cladding, framing views towards Central Gardens while maintaining privacy.
The result is a considered extension that sits comfortably alongside the original home. Rather than separating old and new, the project uses light, material and sightlines to establish a continuous relationship between the existing house, new spaces and the garden beyond.
