With a brief centred on accommodating a growing family of five, the project reworks an existing Edwardian home to create a more considered relationship between the original house, new living spaces and garden.

The extension draws on the clients’ rural upbringing in New South Wales, with terracotta cladding providing a quiet connection to the agricultural buildings and landscapes of their childhood. SK1N terracotta by Brickworks gives the new addition a distinct material character while allowing it to sit comfortably within its suburban setting.

A sunken dining room forms the centre of the new living arrangement, positioned between the house and garden and carefully set below the existing floor level. From the living spaces, the lowered room falls from view, allowing the garden to remain the primary outlook. A custom Made by Morgen table anchors the space, reinforcing its role as a place for shared meals and family life.

Internally, rich timber, rusted tones and tactile stone continue the material language established externally. Custom joinery and carefully resolved thresholds provide storage and connection without adding visual complexity, allowing the spaces to remain open, practical and adaptable to everyday family life.

The result is a considered evolution of the existing home, retaining its Edwardian character while introducing a more generous connection to the garden. The project is deliberately restrained, with materiality, proportion and natural light doing much of the work.
